About the work
Draußen vor der Tür is a postwar drama by Wolfgang Borchert about the German soldier Beckmann, who returns from years of captivity and finds no place for himself in society. His encounters expose questions of guilt, responsibility, alienation and the suppression of wartime experience.
The work was first broadcast as a radio play in 1947 and received its stage premiere in Hamburg later that year.
