Woyzeck

Woyzeck is an unfinished play by Georg Büchner. The impoverished soldier Franz Woyzeck tries to support his partner Marie and their child while enduring humiliation from his superiors and submitting to medical experiments for money. Jealousy and psychological disintegration ultimately drive him to violence. Büchner left the play in fragmentary manuscripts when he died in 1837; it was first staged in Munich in 1913. Because the surviving text is unfinished, editions and productions vary in the ordering of its scenes.
