About the work

The Passing Day is a 1936 play by George Shiels. The dark comedy centres on miserly shopkeeper John Fibbs during the final day of his life, as relatives and acquaintances circle around the question of who will inherit his fortune. The play uses Ulster speech and humour to examine greed, family self-interest and mortality.
