About the work

The Matchmaker is a comedy by Thornton Wilder about wealthy merchant Horace Vandergelder, who hires matchmaker Dolly Levi to find him a wife. Dolly becomes involved in the romantic complications surrounding Vandergelder's employees and acquaintances. The play opened on Broadway in 1955 and later became the basis for the musical Hello, Dolly!.
