About the work
The Dresser is a play by Ronald Harwood about the tense, mutually dependent relationship between an ageing Shakespearean actor and Norman, the dresser who keeps him going during a touring production. Harwood drew on his own experience as dresser to actor-manager Donald Wolfit; the play premiered in Manchester in 1980.
