Peter en Pauwels
Play text: Joost van den Vondel
About the work
Peter en Pauwels is a 1641 tragedy by Joost van den Vondel about the final hours of the apostles Peter and Paul in Rome under Emperor Nero. After they are imprisoned, they are urged to flee the city. Peter returns after a vision to accept his fate; Peter is crucified and Paul is beheaded. The play connects their martyrdom with the persecution of Christians in Rome.
