About the work

Nathan the Wise is an Enlightenment drama by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, set in Jerusalem during the Third Crusade. The Jewish merchant Nathan, Sultan Saladin and a Christian Templar become connected through personal and family ties.

The play explores religious tolerance, humanity and the possibility of crossing confessional boundaries. It was first performed in Berlin in 1783.
