Nathan the Wise is a five-act play of ideas by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, published in 1779 and first publicly performed in Berlin in 1783. Set in Jerusalem during the Third Crusade, it brings together the Jewish merchant Nathan, Sultan Saladin and a Christian Templar. The Ring Parable stands at the centre of the drama and its exploration of religious tolerance and humanity.
