About the work
Ger Thijs adapted Multatuli's novel Max Havelaar for the stage by bringing the colonial stories into the Droogstoppel family's living room. Sjaalman and the family members take on multiple roles, turning the conflict between colonial exploitation, idealism and bourgeois self-interest into a play-within-a-play.
