Music: Claude-Michel Schönberg Book: Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg Lyrics: Alain Boublil, Edward Hardy and Stephen Clark
Martin Guerre is a musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg based on the historical case of the sixteenth-century French peasant Martin Guerre. After Martin disappears from the village of Artigat, a man later returns and is accepted by almost everyone as Martin, although he has assumed another man's identity. The musical explores love, identity, religious conflict and the consequences of the deception. The original West End production premiered in 1996 and the piece was substantially revised several times afterward.
