About the work
Lorenzaccio is a five-act Romantic drama by Alfred de Musset, published in 1834 and first staged in 1896. Set in Florence in 1537, it follows Lorenzo de’ Medici as he deliberately enters the corrupt world around Duke Alessandro de’ Medici to gain his trust and assassinate him; the political change Lorenzo hopes for does not follow the killing. The play combines political intrigue with questions of identity, idealism and the limits of individual action.
