About the work

Christopher Hampton's stage adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos's novel follows the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont as they use seduction, manipulation and betrayal in a contest of power among the French aristocracy before the Revolution. The play premiered with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1985.
