Un couple attend des amis pour dîner, mais ceux-ci ne viennent pas. En cherchant à comprendre leur absence, l’homme et la femme prennent chacun le parti de l’un des absents. Leurs interprétations opposées font surgir quiproquos et révélations intimes, jusqu’à remettre en question les fondements de leur propre couple.
