About the work
Mozart's opera Idomeneo follows Idomeneo, king of Crete, who returns from the Trojan War and promises the sea god that he will sacrifice the first person he meets on shore. When that person is his son Idamante, paternal duty, love and divine command collide, with the Trojan princess Ilia and Elettra of Argos drawn into the conflict.
