About the work

Harvey is a comedy by Mary Chase about Elwood P. Dowd, an affable man who treats his unseen friend Harvey as entirely real. When his family tries to have him committed, the situation develops into a comedy about normality, social convention, and who is actually behaving reasonably. The play opened on Broadway in 1944 and won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
