About the work
Gysbreght van Aemstel is a tragedy by Joost van den Vondel about the fall of medieval Amsterdam. After his enemies appear to withdraw, Gysbreght faces an assault that destroys the city and forces him into exile. The play premiered in 1638 as the opening production of the Amsterdam Schouwburg.
