Libretto: Julius Schubring
Translation (English): William Bartholomew
Elijah (Op. 70, MWV A 25), also known in German as Elias, is an oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy about the biblical prophet Elijah. Its two parts draw on episodes from the Books of Kings and other Old Testament texts, moving through drought, the confrontation with the worshippers of Baal, Elijah’s retreat into the wilderness and his ascent. The large-scale score calls for vocal soloists, mixed choir, orchestra and organ.
