Play text: Eugène Ionesco
Eugène Ionesco's one-act play The Chairs (Les Chaises) is a work of the theatre of the absurd. A very old couple prepares a reception for an ever-growing crowd of invisible guests, continually setting out chairs; an orator is eventually expected to deliver the old man's message to humanity. The play combines farce and tragedy with themes of loneliness, emptiness and failed communication.
