Die Stühle

Eugène Ionesco’s one-act play, The Chairs (Les Chaises), belongs to the theatre of the absurd. An extremely old couple prepares a reception for an ever-growing crowd of invisible guests and keeps arranging chairs; a speaker is eventually expected to convey the old man’s message to humanity. The play combines farce and tragedy around themes such as solitude, emptiness and the failure of communication.
