About the work
The musical “Die Päpstin” tells the story of Johanna, a highly gifted young woman in the early Middle Ages who disguises herself as a man to gain access to education and ecclesiastical offices. Her path leads her into the power structures of the Church and politics and repeatedly forces her to choose between personal freedom, faith, love, and her public role.
