About the work
Der Zarewitsch is an operetta by Franz Lehár about the Russian heir Alexei, who withdraws from love and court life. When Sonja, disguised as a male dancer, gains his trust, their relationship comes into conflict with his dynastic duties. The operetta combines romance with a bittersweet ending in which personal love gives way to responsibility of state.
