About the work

The Tsarevich is an operetta by Franz Lehár about Alexei, the Russian heir to the throne, who withdraws from love and court life. When Sonja, disguised as a male dancer, wins his trust, their relationship comes into conflict with his dynastic obligations. The operetta combines romance with a bittersweet ending in which personal happiness must yield to responsibility toward the state.
