About the work
Der Wald is a one-act opera by Ethel Smyth to a German-language libretto by Smyth and Henry Bennet Brewster. Premiered in Berlin in 1902, the late-Romantic work tells the tragic story of Röschen and the young woodcutter Heinrich, whose rejection of Iolanthe leads to his death; a prologue and epilogue sung by spirits of the forest frame the human drama against the permanence of nature.
