About the work
"The Government Inspector" (German title "Der Revisor") is a comedy by Nikolai Gogol, first staged in 1836 in Saint Petersburg. In a Russian provincial town, the penniless Khlestakov is mistaken for an inspector travelling incognito. The corrupt officials entertain and bribe him until an intercepted letter exposes the mistake.
