About the work
In Bertolt Brecht's parable, three gods search Sezuan for a good person. The prostitute Shen Te gives them shelter and receives money to open a tobacco shop. Her generosity leaves her vulnerable to exploitation, so she creates a hard-edged alter ego, Shui Ta, in order to survive. The play examines the conflict between moral conduct and the social and economic conditions in which people live.
