About the work
Der G’wissenswurm is a peasant comedy with songs in three acts by Ludwig Anzengruber, which premiered in 1874 at the Theater an der Wien. At its centre is the wealthy farmer Grillhofer, who is burdened by the memory of a past misdeed, while his brother-in-law Dusterer attempts to exploit his feelings of guilt for his own interests. When new information about Grillhofer’s past comes to light, his view of guilt, family and the future changes.
