In Luigi Pirandello's comedy, an inquisitive community tries to determine the truth about Mr Ponza, his mother-in-law Signora Frola and the woman they each describe differently. Every explanation undermines the last, making the possibility of a single knowable reality the play's central question. It premiered in Milan in 1917.
