Set in a near-future television studio, Comic Potential imagines a world in which inexpensive android performers, known as actoids, have replaced human actors. Aspiring writer Adam Trainsmith discovers that one actoid, Jacie, has developed an apparently unintended capacity for humour and imagination. His attempt to nurture her comic talent develops into a romance and brings questions of creativity, individuality and humanity into conflict with the studio's production system.
