About the work

The Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) is a six-part sacred work by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed in Leipzig for the Christmas season of 1734/35. The cantatas address the birth of Jesus and further episodes from the Gospels, combining biblical texts, Lutheran chorales, and contemplative poetry for soloists, chorus, and orchestra.
