Heinrich von Kleist’s Amphitryon is a tragicomedy after Molière about identity, fidelity, and deception. When Jupiter assumes the form of the Theban general Amphitryon, Amphitryon and his wife Alcmene become caught in a confusion in which appearance, feeling, and certainty come into conflict.
