The Gay Beggars

The Gay Beggars is an independent, non-professional English-language drama group in Basel, founded in the early 1940s by students of the University of Basel's English department and named after its first play, «The Beggar's Opera». Since 2022 it has been an association (Verein). Newcomers with an interest in theatre and good English are welcome to take part in productions without becoming members.

The group performs for the public, traditionally in the Cellar Theatre at the Schönes Haus on the Nadelberg, and has also staged productions at BAU3 in Basel's Gundeldinger Feld.
