Bel Canto Oostzaan speelde in 1980 Johann Strauss jr.’s operette Der Zigeunerbaron, op tekst van Ignaz Schnitzer, in de Nederlandse vertaling van Joop Fransen. De operette volgt Sándor Barinkay na zijn terugkeer naar het familielandgoed en zijn relatie met Saffi, tegen de achtergrond van afkomst, liefde en militaire dienst.
