Putney Theatre Company is casting four parts for The 39 Steps: Richard Hannay (male, playing age 30–40, must be clean shaven for a pencil moustache); Annabella Schmidt / Pamela / Margaret (female, playing age 25–35, multi-rolling with dramatic death scenes and a Scottish accent); and Clown 1 and Clown 2 (any age or gender, each playing ten or more characters with physical comedy and quick changes). The production uses flashing lights, haze and loud noises.

Auditions are open to adults aged 18 and over and are held at the Putney Arts Theatre Main Auditorium on Sunday 15 November 2026 at 15:00 or Monday 16 November 2026 at 19:00, with recalls if needed on Thursday 19 November at 19:00. No preparation is required, though reading the play is helpful. The audition form must be completed by Friday 13 November 2026. There is no cost to audition and non-members can audition, but cast members must join the company (£30 a year) and pay a £35 show fee. Rehearsals start in the week of 30 November 2026, typically two evenings a week plus Sundays, rising to up to four days a week near the performances.
