- Ms Fawcett (30–50): a pompous council official, doubled with Dawn
- Mr Parsons (30–50): an inept council sidekick, doubled with Troy Whitworth
- Johnny "Rooster" Byron (50–70): a Romany ex-showman and the demanding lead, with several long monologues
- Ginger (30–45): an out-of-work plasterer and aspiring DJ
- Professor (65–80): a bumbling retired academic with mild dementia
- Lee Piper (20–25): a new age dreamer
- Davey (20–25): an abattoir worker; basic accordion or similar instrument skills are ideal
- Pea (15–18): a hyperactive tearaway
- Tanya (15–18): a provocative, funny and flirtatious teenager
- Wesley (middle-aged): a worn-out pub landlord; bad Morris dancing is essential
- Dawn (30–50): Johnny's strong-minded ex-wife, doubling Ms Fawcett
- Marky (10): two scenes and a couple of lines
- Troy Whitworth (40–50): Phaedra's thuggish stepfather, doubling Mr Parsons
The play is set in Wiltshire, so strong West Country accents are needed, though some variation is allowed. Playing ages matter because the generations must be clearly distinct.
