The jukebox musical is based on the film Bullets Over Broadway by Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath. In 1920s New York, young playwright David Shayne gets the chance to have his play produced on Broadway when a gangster agrees to finance it, on the condition that the gangster's girlfriend receives a role. Artistic ambition, backstage intrigue and the unexpected writing talent of a mob enforcer push the production increasingly out of control. The score uses jazz and popular standards from the 1920s.
