Der gute Mensch von Sezuan

In Bertolt Brecht’s parable, three gods search Sezuan for a good person. The prostitute Shen Te offers them lodging and receives money to open a tobacco shop. Her generosity makes her vulnerable to exploitation, so she creates a tough alter ego, Shui Ta, in order to survive. The play examines the conflict between moral action and the social and economic conditions in which people live.
